Paragraph 2 "Marketing Music"

One example is a band  called London Grammar, a British band, that were able to market themselves and their music all around the world at a touch of the button, the band had formed in 2009 and started to do small gigs at their local pubs, however they found themselves getting no further than this, they had no record label or backing from a producer so in late 2011 the band had decided to create a YouTube channel along with a sound cloud account where they would upload their newest songs to hopefully spread the word of their talent, and ever since then they have used online media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to get out there so to speak. Upon researching the band it soon became clear that social media sites have made a huge influence on the band members life’s, infact the band wouldn’t have existed in the first place if Dan Rothman (the guitarist) did not approach Hannah Reid after seeing a picture of her on Facebook with a guitar. On the 12th of December 2012 the three band members had decided to post their new song “Hey Now” on YouTube and to date has over 1.9million views, along with this their Sound Cloud version had received 370,000 plays in early 2013. They also marketed themselves by using iTunes for their songs, and at one point their album EP Metal & Dust reached the top five in the iTunes Chart in Australia despite it being on the other side of the planet. An interview with a Nhs manager said she had found out about London grammar on YouTube whilst she was watching a vlog by a separate youtuber with no link to the band itself, she had then listened to their song “Hey Now”  and had quickly grew a like for the music and shortly after had purchased their album on iTunes. After a post on Facebook ‘Just been listening to London Grammar in my new Car with the roof down. Lovely car, lovely music, lovely day: D’ she received several comments about how her friends had also downloaded the album because of the recommendation on Facebook  ,   therefore by using social media sites such as I have mentioned it has increased their presence on the internet and now if you were to ask someone if they had heard of the Band London Grammar the likely hood of them answering yes is a lot higher than when they formed in 2012 and this is all because of these sites that have secured them a record deal and have got in the top 5 of several countries singles charts.

B GRADE
Generally good use of research, but you definitely need to include an opening point that provides the basis for your paragraph. That way you have a structure that runs throughout the essay and it ensures that you are definitely focused on answering the question. Try to include the use of questionnaire data to demonstrate wider ranging primary research.

Impact of digital technology on the marketing of music (First Point)

Discuss the impact of digital technology on the marketing of music

Since digital technology has developed so much that 96% of the world’s population own a mobile phone, music has become more widely available. Worldwide there is a 40% increase over the last year on mobile broadband growth and the way music is marketed now through the phone varies extremely. Apple first developed iTunes in April, 2003 and by 2006 iTunes had a gain of 88% of the legal music downloads market in the US, since then iTunes has now became mobile therefore allowing us to browse and download music anywhere whether we are connected via 3G or Wi-Fi. What this means is that the majority of downloaders use this store, and when researching further into what this statistic was based on it did include using mobile technology, so we are in effect carrying around a whole music store which contains huge amounts of songs all at the touch of a icon, this could also mean that music producers can advertise certain albums when they want to by featuring them on the opening page of iTunes giving consumers a whole new dimension on how they buy music. To back this up one of my research sources stated that ‘respondents generally favor the browser experience over downloadable mobile apps, except when it comes to games, social media, maps and music’.   In our class alone everyone has a mobile phone or a device with them that has the ability to browse the internet, and the majority of class mates do in fact use iTunes or a similar app that allows you to download music whether that being legally or illegally, from personal experience in actual fact I download several albums a month from iTunes and in the last month 5 out of 7 of these albums have been whilst I have been using a Wi-Fi hotspot away from my house this for that reason backs up that music has become more widely available since the emergence of mobile technology and that myself as a consumer along with millions of others frequently use online music stores instead of going t a music shop e.g. HMV and buy a CD which is a tangible product unlike that of downloadable content.

B Grade
A really good first attempt. You lacked an opening point and went straight into presenting your research, which did make is somewhat difficult to reach a conclusion within your interpretation. However, your research was sufficiently detailed and expansive and the interpretation of it had sufficient depth to suggest that this is certainly worth a B grade. Try to stick to the structure I suggested even more closely.

Clear expression and only a few small errors in your writing. You should be pleased with this piece.

Thank you for the research links, I will post them in the main blog.

Media Studies Kerrang Analysis

For my media I have analysed Kerrang! one of the well known rock magazines which publish an edition every two weeks. Enjoy.
To produce this short video I have taken a quote from kerrang.com which is:
Kerrang! identifies its audience as ‘individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty’. Kerrang distinguish their identity as a world ‘where Jackass meets Playstation and Skate culture meets ipod’
I have also used the application available through the Apple App Store- Bcontext
And to learn to embed the video into Blogger I have used:

C Grade (But close to a B)
This is a creative presentation that demonstrates detailed analysis of the magazine and a creative use of media in the presentation. If you use this presentational format again, you need to think about using different fonts as the ones you used made the text seem insignificant. It may also be useful to vary the text elements as you speak to convey more information. This is particularly true when discussing critical theory. With that in mind, you need to review both Uses and Gratifications Theory and Barthes Narrative codes so that you can use them more accurately. You gave some explanation of the tutorials you accessed, but you need to evaluate their effectiveness next time.

Well done. A good first attempt.
